In 1998 the Bayerischer Handball-Verband, the Bavarian handball federation, was restructured. Since then it consists of eight districts. Our district is Ostbayern, located in the middle of Bavaria. The most famous towns in our district are Erlangen and Regensburg. Each year every district selects the best players for the representative team and competes once a year against the other districts. The best players from all districts will be selected for the theam of the Bavarian handball federation. The next step for those players would be the German national team. Players like Steffen Weinhold (THW Kiel) went all the way from the Ostbayern district team to the national team.
In Ostbayern we take great pride in offering more than skilled coaches and the practises that are held twice a month. Every year we participate in tournaments all over Europe. This makes our girls and boys that were selected from about 55 different clubs not only better players, but also better people. This way they develop a great chemistry with their team members which also helps when they compete against each other on club level for championships.
Of course, those friendships help our Ostbayern team as well. In June 2016 our girls team (born 2000 or younger) won the Bavarian championship in Grosswallstadt. After 4 victories we met Alpenvorland in the final and beat them 25:12 in 30 minutes. Our boys team (born 2000 and younger) made it to finals as well. Injuries to key players prevented us from going all the way, but the second place against strong competition was a good result. In the race for the most successful district we finished first place.
Our youngest teams were equally successful in 2016: The girls (born 2003 and younger) won the championship and stayed undefeated, the boys (born 2002 and younger) lost a heartbreaker in the final and came in second place. Again, we finished as best district in Bavaria.
We hope to be equally successful in 2017 and the Koper Cup will be a great test for our teams.
We learned about this tournament after participating in Hamburg in 2016 and are proud that we were invited to a country that breathes handball and developed so many great players. We plan to participate with 6 or 7 teams. We are looking forward to squaring off against teams from other countries and to meeting members of the international handball family that we don't know yet.
